Heel Pain

Plantar fasciitis is not a term you may have come across, but heel spur is probably one you have. The most common cause of heel pain is inflammation of the area around the heel , the plantar fascia, hence the term "plantar fasciitis". Many sufferers have a bony prominence on the heel - the spur - which can be seen on an X Ray.

Pain is often felt on rising from bed and after being seated for a while. It will last a few minutes until you have walked around for a while. There are no visible signs of inflammation but a localised area may be painful to the touch.

Causes of heel pain include inadequate flexibility in the calf muscles, lack of arch support, being overweight, suddenly increasing activity, and spending too much time on the feet. Heel bursitis is a swelling on both sides of the Achilles tendon. Heel bumps are raised swelling due to shoes rubbing against the area.

Treatment

A full assessment and history needs to be carried out before any treatment can be given.

In the short term a heel pad can be placed in the shoe which will offer some shock absorption.

Long term treatment includes insoles or orthotics which will support the foot and alter the gait which reduces stress on the area. Laser treatment works effectively to reduce inflammation and needs to be administered over several weeks and should be used in conjenction with gel heel pads or orthotics such as the Vasyli range.

If the pain continues you may be referred to your GP who can administer a hydrocortisone injection which reduces inflammation.
